Don't focus on the letters themselves, as they don't mean anything. They merely are representing a value that is unknown. You could use anything, such as dog+cat = 12 and dog equals 5. Therefore, cat equals 7. Relax! You'll do fine.

Don't worry. It is actually much easier once you get the basics. You will be able to fly around algebra once you start recognizing how to handle different equations. There are allot of rules of algebra and once you have those down, you are set. Remember to use your teacher and/or other students for help -- posting on Yahoo answers is not a good idea. You need to grasp algebra or math down the road will be even harder.
A key thing to remember with algebra is that the "letters are representing numbers" -- that is it! Any letter could be any number, which is what you are trying to figure out -- that's algebra! Don't worry. Study the rules and do your own homework and you'll be fine.

The equation
3a + 4b =
a = 2
b = 5
Insert the a and b values into the equation
3(2) + 4(5) =
6 + 20 =
26
- - - - - -
The values of a and b must be conneced with an equation in order to solve.

You might want to look the term algebraic logic and see what it says about solving problems. I have found that all algebra works in straight lines such as A+B=27 there are no curves involved and the letters are just there representing a known value. Nothing to worry about.

the letters are called variables. If you're going into 9th grade & will be taking algebra, you'll learn about it.
A variable is just a letter, like a, b or x.
They are used in equations, like x+5=8
In algebra, you learn ways to solve equations and find what a variable is. "Variable" means that it is a number that makes a number sentence true.
if I confused you more. i'm sorrryyy D:
dont worry too much, though. you'll get it.
&&Good luck in school!

Just allocate letters as directed:-
Example 1
x = 4 , y = 8
x + y = 4 + 8
x + y = 12
y - x = 8 - 4
y - x = 4
Example 2
c = 12 , d = 7
c - d = 12 - 7
c - d = 5
c + d = 12 + 7
c + d = 19
