Have done both. You do have some backing when booking through a travel agent if something goes wrong during your vacation - such as a weather related issue or for example when the Dominican Republic had all the intestinal illnesses happening a couple of years ago. Your travel company can sometimes help you get out of the country and/or get a
% of a refund. If you make your own arrangements you don't have that option.

I do both.

For a big overseas adventure to someplace I've never been. I will use a travel agent the first time. Just to be sure all bases are covered. However if it's a repeat location. I know what's involved and what I want. So I will prowl the brochures, newspapers, and the internet for what I want at the rate I'm willing to pay and do it myself.

Well I am lucky enough to have a travel department at my disposal so if it is a complicated trip I seek them out but for all national trips I do myself. The internet makes it so easy these days. :)
