Well, that is a matter of opinion.

For me, it would have to be Romeo et Juliette. It's a foreign musical about of course, Romeo and Juliet. The music is great, and so is the performers, the dancing, the costumes, and even the lighting!
Here is a short commercial for it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sl5mh1ra6Qw

The first act is available on Google if you're interested.

The first musical I saw was Barnum based on the life of Circus owner P.T. Barnum it starred Jim Dale in the title role but my all time favourite is Phantom Of The Opera. The music and sets were amazing.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL IS NOT A MUSICAL! IT'S A DISNEY MOVIE!!!!!

asdfjkl;

There, now that I got that out of my system...

I really don't think we can say what the overall best musical is, although there are classics such as "Sound of Music" that come to mind. I think anything by Rodgers and Hammerstein rank way up there on the list.

Well, I couldn't honestly tell what the best of all time was because I haven't seen every musical but the one that moves me everytime I see it is Rent.

I also very much enjoy many others, but Les Miserables and Into the Woods are other favorites of mine.

You didn't say what your favorite was???

I agree with Sondheim -- there's Porgy and Bess, and then there's everything else.

But if you are picky (since P&B can technically be called an opera) I would have to go with Show Boat or Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

With Thoroughly Modern Millie thrown in as well. ;)

the only way i will think of of to gauge the recognition of a musical production is to work out which Braodway musical has the longest run. "Phantom of the Opera" has that distinction. It previewed Jan. 9, 1988 on the Majestic Theatre and opened there on Jan. twenty 6th. it continues to be working and has a modern-day entire of seven,767 performances.
