To Live Well, or at least well by my standards, your going to need to be making at least 60k a year. After taxes and after rent, electric, food, cable, internet plus the stuff you mentioned, even at 60k things might get tight. Plus if you have teens they are going to need vehicles. The expense list goes on and on, just really sit down and figure out what you'll be bringing home and what your bills are. If I was in your position I'd want to be making around 80k (including your wife) to be "well-off"

Just where do you plan to find an apartment for 4 people for only $1000 a month in South Florida or the Las Vegas area... you had better double that figure... and then some
You need to be making a minimum of about $50,000 a year for a family your size in those locations and you won't be living all that well on such a small amount.

plan on at least a bit more for rent as rents and home prices have shot up in the past few years here in the USA so i say between 40-120k for a family of 4 depending were you live places in rural areas cheaper and metro areas being the most expensive.
however to live good add at least an extra 20k
While you can exist on a lot less and even get reduced housing help with utility's food you have to be making so little
your not really living or at least not living very good as people who qualify for section 8 housing or food stamp are doing it due to the fact there living in poverty

A family of four should see an income about 60,000 annual gross income to just get by. The car payments - well - add another 5,000. Dining out - another 3,600. 70,00 will be comfortable, but not rich. Whether that is single or combined income, as long as you can pay your bills and save a little.
Free stuff??? Please, not on my dime.

Well, as a citizen, if you make nothing at all, you can get free medical care, medicines, food, even a free house in some states, free daycare, heating oil....
But if you make too much, you have to pay for everything the people getting the freebies receive plus all your own stuff.
But if you are rich, you can pay a lot less in taxes than the middle guy...and afford all your own crap.
I hope this helps.

60,000 is good to live in that area. if you move up north towards New York that price goes down about 10k a year. but 60,000 will give you lots of comfort.
