Doctors used to advise getting an episiotomy to avoid tearing, as they used to say tearing was worse...

But now I'm hearing that it's best to tear, because when you tear, it's only skin, but when they cut they sever muscles, nerves, everything.

While healing time might be longer, and it might be more painful to tear, supposedly if you tear, you are less likely to have incontinence problems later like you would with an episiotomy...

Any opinions?

you are correct...alot of doctors now are allowing you to naturally tear or doing a perinium massage to allow the skin to strech.....theres been quite a few cases of women who have had a eposiotomy that later on would have to have surgery to correct a bad epis....but if it was me( which in about 7 months it will be) i will naturally tear again....epidural yes but episiotomy no!

I had a 1st degree tear with my son. He was premature by 5 weeks so I didn't think I would tear or need an episiotomy. I had an epidural so I didn't feel it and I also didn't notice it afterwards. That may have been due to the smallness of it though. I was told it only required one stitch. I would definitely go with a natural tear vs. an episiotomy. I have heard they hurt worse than natural tears.

I was told that a tear is much worse, and can do damage. An episiotomy is controlled. I had one, and it hurt, but it was better than tearing. I've had 2 friends who tore, and for one it took an hour to sew up and she was in pain a lot longer than I was. My doctor only did one because he could see I was starting to tear. he told me that he only does them if he has too. I'm assuming most doctors do the same.

I had an episiotomy with my first. They gave me a shot to numb the area and I only had one stitch. It healed nicely and didn't give me any problems. With my second I tore. I didn't get the numbing shot and since I only needed one stitch the doctor didn't numb the area before he stitched me. It seemed to me that it hurt more the time I tore. I didn't have any problems healing though. I didn't have an epidural with either child. Personally, I would recommend the episiotomy. If you have a good doctor he won't cut anymore than necessary.

I remember being tought in health class about how it's so much better to be cut, blah blah blah, but now I am also hearing the same thing. I presonaly will NEVER let them cut me for the reasons you stated and the fact that you are ot garenteed to tear and need stitches, but if they cut you you will need stitches and since a tear has already started(a cut is like a controled tear) you are more likely to continue tearing, but not only the skin, the muscle tissue as well.
