Ross and Monica are siblings. Rachel used to go to school with Monica (and Ross - who has had a crush on her since 9th grade). Rachel was ditched at the alter so she moved in with Monica to find her independance. Chandler was Ross' college roommate and ended up living across the hall from Monica. Chandler's roomate, Kip, left the apartment, and Joey came into the picture through an ad he saw for an empty room. Phoebe is the massage therapist and is a part-time singer at Central Perk (the coffee house they hang out at), that's how she knew the others. At one point she becomes Monica's roomate. That's a very brief rundown on how they became 'Friends' :)

Chandler went to the same school as Ross who is Monica's sister. Monica knows Rachel from school and she ended up staying with her as she didn't go through with her wedding,this is how she met Phoebe (at Monica's house).Oh yeah and Joey is a friend of Chandler (generally no link).The group really got to together by everyone having a relation with Ross and Monica so all this together they ended up a Friends.

I know that Monica met Chandler through her brother Ross and that they used to go to high school with Rachel and I think they met Joey when Chandler was looking for a roommate and I think Ross might have met Phoebe at a bar??

Rachel and Monica grew up as friends. Ross is Monica's brother and always had a crush on Rachel and Chandler was Ross' friend from college. Chandler met Joe when he applied to be his roomate in his apartment and I can't remember how they met Phoebe...
