That is one of the questions that computer geeks have argued for years. Turning it off will save you money on electricity. Average is around $300-400 a year. (Or about $35 a month to leave a computer and monitor running 24/7)

Will turning the PC on and off damage it? Early PCs could be affected by a power surge. Today's PCs are unlikely to be harmed by turning them on or off. It is like the question should I leave me car running 24/7 because starting it is harder on the engine then anything else? Running a computer nonstop is also "hard" on the PC - overheating etc.

Plus there are certain tyoes of memory and hard drive clean up, and certain Microsoft and security patches that only install or start running on a reboot. So rebooting your PC at least once a week is strongly recommended.

Also, if your computer is turned off, it can not get infected with viruses, spyware, or hacking into by someone. It can if it is running 24/7 unsupervised.

I have five computers in my home. One (that I use as a file server) has probably not been rebooted in at least a year. As the laptop that is my favorite to work on usually only gets rebooted once or twice a week. The other three (that are not used that often) are only turned on when needed.

So it is yor preference if you want to run it 24/7 or shut down and restart every time (or somewhere in between - shut down if you will be gone for several hours). But neither will harm your computer - or help it.

The only part that can be damaged by being turned off and on is the power supply.

Consider a light bulb. They take longer to die if you leave them on forever, but will die sooner if turned on and off over and over. You will save power, but you will have to replace the lightbulb and a minimal cost.

At any rate, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you'd like to save some money on your electric bill, turn it off when not in use.

I always turn my computer off after I'm done using it.
(save $$$)
But most people put it in a low power mode.

Not at all.
I use my pc's virtually every day & they get switched off at the end of each night & booted when I need them the next day.
Have done for years, no problems!

No it's fine as long as it's turned off properly.
