Tennessee Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana ( some good deals and plenty of work in New Orleans.

I would say Crown Point, IN because the people are freindly, good paying jobs, and its safe. Houses and apartments are cheap.

I live in Springfield, Missouri and the cost of living is pretty cheap

you can definitely rule out California!! southern states probably your best bet.
