I have 1 BIG BIG one, and now I bought 5 smaller ones to make a border to my flowerbed...
The smaller ones are about the fifth of the size of the biggest one. I don't want any drastic different sizes....

And when is the best time to do so -- for a 5b aera ? (Ottawa, Canada)

You can split a hosta in many different pieces! They will all root and grow separately. The best time to to it would be at the beginning of the growing season in the spring time. Keep them well watered so that they will root faster. Doing it at that time gives you all year long to let the roots develop so that are secure and will be able to make it through the winter months. Good luck!!

The easiest time is when the leaf tips have just broken the soil surface in spring. The plant is easiest to manage but the eyes have not expanded fully so you may limit the years growth. However if you are planting them now, divide first because you are unpotting them not digging them up. With intact roots they will recover very quickly. Hostas can be divided any time of the year, but late August early September is best, because at this time of the year plants are actively growing new roots. If you divide in the spring before the eyes have completely expanded, expect to have smaller plants and shorter leaves. The same results can occur if you have to use a knife and cut the crowns.

Begin dividing the clumps by washing the roots in a bucket of water or with a hose end sprayer. If you have a soil sieve/sturdy screen set it up supported between two buckets. You can set the plant on the soil sieve and wash the soil off. You will be able to clean the dirt off the crown and the roots while standing up.
The next step, after cleaning the dirt off of the roots, is to pull any easily removable stems or "eyes" from the crown.
If you cannot break the clump apart, a sharp knife will have to be used. Remember, since you want to keep as many roots and leaves as possible, make your cuts through the crown, but not into the roots.
DO NOT let the roots dry out at all. If you cannot plant them right away, place some moist soil or peat moss on the roots and put them in dense shade as you work.
To plant prepare their holes with rich organics to feed and retain water, as hosta do not like to dry out. Mound the soil at the bottom of the hole. Spread the roots out and down over the mound. Be sure the crown is slightly above the surrounding soil so it will settle to the surrounding level once watered in. Firmly press soil around all the roots leaving no air pockets to dry the roots. Water deeply. Keep the soil well moistened the first 10 days while the roots grow in. Seaweed makes a very good transplant solution to encourage new root growth.
Look for Neptune, SeCom, Sea Plus, Lilly Miller or many others. I also like to add a few drops of Superthrive plant vitamins when transplanting.

Divide hostas in the spring, when the first shoots are coming up. A clump of about 5 - 7 shoots will give you a nice plant in the summer, provided you water it.
