IT by Stephen King. There is nothing more horrifying than clowns and giant spiders. CUJO runs a close second, but then I hate dogs anyway.

My choice would be a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Black Cat," which was so dark and horrifying it gave me nightmares.

I know you asked for a novel, and I have read a few horror novels, but none affected me as much as this little work by Poe.

"Buried Alive," by the same author is another rather terrifying short piece.

I made my physically ill at one point. Yes - just like the avatar indicates!

Enjoy!

House of Leaves, by Mark Danielewski (I think I've got that last name right.)

The author creates such an oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere, and then draws the reader so effectively into it using typographic and structural tricks, that I was literally not just scared by the story, I was afraid of the book itself and the effect it was having on me. (And I'm a huge, long-time horror fan, so I don't scare easy.)

I have never read a horror novel that was frightening - at least, not since I was first learning to read. It's just not possible for me to get frightened over something that is so obviously fictional.

The *best* horror novel I've ever read is Dracula, and it's free online.

Salem's Lot by Stephen King. I still get the sweats when I think about it. Very scary novel.
