I live in Fort Lauderdale and work in Miami, and hurricanes are a reality, but you do get advance notice, unlike earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, explosions, etc. So we don't live in fear. You just want to live in a place that is well constructed (not a trailer!!!) and not in a flood zone. Even when a hurricane hits the Keys, Miami might have sunny weather or some wind and rain, but hurricanes usually have about a ten mile to 40 mile wide path of direct impact. Wima hit Ft. Laud. and North Miami in 2005. It was a category 2 and did lots of tree and roof damage. Power was out for weeks, telephone out for a month, and everything closed for a week, including schools, gas stations, stores, red lights off, etc.
There are a number of colleges here, so that's no problem, but in Miami itself you need to speak Spanish to get a good job. 900000 people speak Spanish and 600000 speak English in Miami-Dade County. If they try the "English only" stuff in Miami, it's like telling the ocean to be still.

Considering Miami's proximity to the Atlantic, Gulf, and Caribbean, it can be a prime target for hurricanes. That being said, until the most recent hotbed of hurricane activity in 2004 and 2005, Miami went unaffected for more than a decade after Hurricane Andrew. And prior to Andrew, it was more than 20 years since a hurricane had last had a direct hit upon the area. As for good schools, the University of Miami is among the best colleges in the country, but you might nmeed to improve your spelling if you hope to get in.

It all depends. Its very random, and we have some pretty bad hurricanes every once in awhile. The worst I have experienced was Wilma. I know Andrew was awful. Just, when the hurricane gets closer, if its a 3 or higher, try heading North. Bring all your pets with you. What my family does is board up windows, bring everything inside, and buy lots of groceries and food for the animals. But I think FL has "Hurricane Target" written all over it, especially since its on the coast, and it just sticks out so far.
