sodium chloride is a compound made up of sodium and chlorine - this tells you it is not a pure substance. Homo means same and heteros means different. As the two elements that make NaCl are not the same, it must be a heterogenous mixture.

A pure substance is anything that has a specific chemical formula, that is, an element or a compound. Therefore NaCl is a pure substance.
