It is my dream to go to Stanford, but besides the good academics i want to know what kind of activities you should do. I know u shouldn't do just for college, but....... What type of extra curriculars/community service or summer programs would be outstanding for college?

Stanford is known for their medical school. Working with people, if you like it, would be a great place to start. How about a camp counselor, esp one for some type of disabled population, or how about attending some type of mission trip (doing mission work), Volunteer for Special Olympics, Volunteer or work at a local hospital, See if there is a local vets office (I know, not people, but showing you care about life in general would be cool!) that hires help take a job like that, Work with habitat for Humanity. I think colleges like to see people who are involved with others and who generally like to live life to the fullest, while being happy about it. An added bonus, if you like this kind of stuff, it'll make you happy! Good Luck!

Things you enjoy are always important.

However, I'd look for academic clubs if I enjoy a particular subject. For example, a literary magazine if you like English, or a science club. Community service clubs are a great opportunity to have fun and also get some leadership skills. The Key Club is a national service club that a lot of high schools have.

Clubs where you can create something to show colleges (like a literary magazine, a school website club, or an art club) is a good idea. Getting into a club where the club advisor is or was one of your teachers helps because the teacher will know you better and can write you a good recommendation.

You should try to stay in the clubs you pick for all four years, so you can accomplish a lot of things and so your teacher/advisor of the club knows you better. Also, in your last two years of high school, if you have been in the club for a long time, you can try to run for a leadership position. Even if you don't become president and end up being a secretary, you will still have more leadership skills under your belt. ;)

If you are very social and have a lot of friends (and have a lot of great ideas), then Student Council is a good idea for leadership.

Taking summer classes, getting a job over the summer, or finding a place to volunteer for a few hours a day while on vacation is a good idea. A lot of kids volunteer at the local library, or for pet shelters.

If you are good at school, then you can try tutoring. It's good whether you make money from tutoring or even if you just do it to volunteer.

Do things that help other people. You'll be amazed at what that does for your self esteem. Go to the games. Join their band if you can! Don't forget to study. Get a job. Find some friends and good pizza. Study. Good grades at Stanford go a long way.

When choosing extracurricular activities it is wise to select something that is in accordance with whatever you plan to major in once in college. If yo plan to major in any of the social science areas it is good to do lots of volunteer work for community organizations, for example. If you cannot find anything apropos to your major, choose the activities closest to your desired career.

Do things you enjoy or will help you prepare for a career or will help the community. Sports, newspaper, community service clubs, etc. Try several and see which ones you like.

Do things you enjoy, and do them in depth. Admissions officers are trained to recognize students who do things just to put them on their resumes, and they don't like them.
