What might be some of the reasons why a/c might come out hot instead of cold??

First, check the filter. There may be more than one. If it's not that, call a repairman. It may be freon or a whole list of other things. Check around and see who has a good reputation.

First make sure your furnace filters are clean; if not clean or replace as needed.

Second make sure the compressor is running. Go outside and make sure the fan is running. If it is not, perhaps the circuit breaker is tripped; check that outl. If the fan is working the compressor may not be working but you should not check it out as you can get hurt in the process. The problem can also be that you are low on refrigerant (Freon or whatever your unit takes). At this time contact a qualified service person to further check things out.

It could be out of freon (or just low) or the compressor doesn't work any more.

your condensing unit outside has not engaged
(faulty contactor)
compressor not running (faulty capacitor/burned wire)
both compressor and fan are running
(dirty condenser/low freon)
compressor runs but fan does not
(faulty condenser motor)
