I have purchased an adaptor that links my laptop hard drive to my PC via USB. I need to recover data from this drive as my laptop is no longer working. When connected it displays all folders/files apart from my personal folder in the Documents and Settings section. It says 'Access is denied'. Would this be because I had a user name and password to log on to my laptop? Are there any ways of getting round this does anybody know? My laptop ran Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and I just set up a username and password myself in Control Panel.

None of the suggestions are working. It still says this particular folder is 'unaccessible' and 'access denied'.
Does it really work in Safemode? How do I do that?

Try doing a search for the specific file type i.e. *.doc for word, *.jpg for most pictures, *.mp3 for music and chose to search only the laptop drive. Then try copying over the files that come up on the search to your PC.

There a re a lot of programs that recover lost passwords on your computer. Only small apps but they will find any passwords logins etc. that you may have lost or forgotten. If this doesnt work then copy the files to an external hard drive then move the info from there to your new computer. If it is a small file then a flash drive will do.

Hi
navigate:
c:\document and settings > (folder named as the user who owned the files you need) if not then:
Your new user should be amdinistrator and then you can access it via the same above method.
Otehrwise do the same c:\document and settinsg in :
start menu > run> type: cmd (brings up dos screen)
Enjoy!

I don't suggest you go to this particular company but if you get the gadget they are selling then you take out the Hard drive from you laptop, connect it to the adapter and then use it like a second hard drive so you can retrieve all the data you need.

Of course if your hard drive is dead then retrieving your bits and bobs is far more difficult and potentially expensive so try the above option first.

Files you deleted from laptop computer hard drive (even deleted from recycle bin or Shift and delete) were not erased permanently. They are just inaccessible or invisible. The space your deleted files located on is marked as free space that can be occupied or taken by new data. Therefore, you can recover your deleted files with data recovery software. Asoftech data recovery is such kind of software. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data you accidentally deleted.
By the way,you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your deleted files can be recovered. It will show you the file name, type, date and size of your files and thumbnails for your pictures that it found on your drive.

Possibly, does it give you a login screen asking for a password?
