Because it's entertaining, to escape and, if you use your library, it's cheap cheap cheap. Your imagination is a million times better than what you can see on TV and if you find fiction you like you're set. It also keeps your brain 'on its feet'.

Obviously, TV/Film, music, etc are still good to do/watch/etc...

I don't enjoy reading to much. When I find a book based on a tv series or something I like. I will give it a try. I tend to read two different books at one time so if I get bored with one I will go straight to the other. Otherwise I will forget about it and tend to go for months without reading. I know you probably heard this before, but you can learn new things when you read. Like, if there is a word you don't know, you stop and look it up in the dictionary. It would help if you new what the word meant. This summer I read more books then I did in the past years. I never read that much. But I enjoyed the books so much. Why you ask because I enjoy reading.

Hello again Skycat. I read partly because I always have (am now 56 and have been reading anything and everything since I was 4) but because I love the written word (and hate TV). But the problem these days is that there are hardly any good writers, so I have gone back to the 50s and 60s and am re-reading stuff. I also love to read poetry, and a mate just bought me Soul Food, which is edited by Neil Astley, who is one of the very best poetry editors around nowadays. The same mate (who works in a bookshop) also bought me Alphabet by Kathy Page, because a few years ago I raved about her novel The Story Of My Face. Reading (as many people will tell you) is an escape, and a broadening of your horizons etc - I had a violent, abusive and terrible childhood, but books saved me. I could ESCAPE. You should read A Word Child by Iris Murdoch.

I think it's because Harry Potter got me hooked on phoenix.

Oh my god, I've been itching to use that joke for the longest time. Does that make me a complete dork? Yes. But, seriously, I started reading WAY before I heard of Harry Potter. It started with Junie B. Jones in like second grade.

And to seriously answer your question, because it's fun beyond some people's imaginations. Some people scoff at me when they find out I read books as much as I inhale air (which I hope is often enough....) but who cares? It's something to do, better than seeing a movie, especially when the book version is a hundred times better, and it's just plain fun. Many other reasons exist for me, but these are some of them.

When I was at school I must admit reading was not my strong point. This only came later when I was about sixteen and was starting to be drawn in to the political chaos other ways known as the Northern Irish troubles.Rather than jump in ,as some of my contemporaries did,I decided to read up on what ,why where and when.I guess a self taught education which inevitably lead me down a more literature lead course .Thank God for books.

I read to relax. I have older kids (18 and 16), so they are into their own things. My husband would much rather watch movies, so I have a library I go to and read. It seems there is just nothing on tv, especially during the summer. So far this year I have read over 50 books:)

I read for the simple pleasure of my imagination. A book is a window to another world. No one's imagination is the same we could read the same book and the characters will look different. I read for the story and the world the author wanted to create. I am very envious of them.

I also read to learn. When you read, your brain processes the information differently than when you watch t.v. or listen on the radio.

Mainly to escape from reality - started reading like this when things were difficult at home - would help me escape for awhile. Still read for escapism and pure enjoyment.... Not forgetting it helps in terms of improving intelligence and imagination. I am a teacher and I read everyday to my class and they are 14!!!! By picking great books to read they have started to enjoy it despite the fact that they have special needs and have reading ages around 5-6.

From Bill Hicks:

I was in a waffle-house recently, I'm not proud of it; I was hungry, so anyway, after I order my food (off a menu with PICTURES of food on it, by the way), I'm sitting there eating my meal, and reading a book, when the waffle-waitress comes over to me and asks...

"What ch'you readin' for?"

What am I reading FOR?

I've been asked 'what are you reading?' before, but never 'what are you reading FOR?'...

I replied,

"Gee, I guess I read so I don't end up as a ******* waffle-waitress, like you"

Because I can escape from life. A book either makes you grateful or wishful. Also books are so much more descriptive than TV, it can go back and forth in time, talk about emotions and ideas of characters. The problem with TV and film is that you get the same actors in everything and they all look and talk the same, in books they are only the character and no-one else.
