Betty can be a nickname but is used as a stand alone first name also. In the 50s, Betty Lou and Betty Ann were very popular. In this area, Betty is usually the nickname for Elizabeth. Bett and Betts is a nick name sometimes for Betty. And so it goes.

I've known two people nicknamed Betty in my life. One was short for Bertha the other was short for Bettina.
