I just installed Verizon DSL internet. It is working OK, but it seems to be blocking certain sites, most of which are secure sites, like ebay, myspace, Capitalone's credit card site, my webmail from Penn State etc. My old internet is still active, so I hooked that back up, and tried these sites, and they all work fine, so it has to be something with the Verizon service. I called their tech support, and we went tried a bunch of things, with no luck. They're saying it's something wrong with my computer! I doubt that since the sites work with my old service on this same computer! I've seen some other people on google having similar problems, but no solutions. Anyone have any ideas why only certain secure sites seem to be blocked? Some of these are kind of important sites for me!
BTW, it's Windows 98, so there is no firewall, and I don't subscribe to Verizons firewall, or extra security package. Thanx

is it just the secure areas of those sites or those sites all together? since you ruled out your PC by using another connection, it sure sounds like the provider. try flushing your DNS

Start > Run > IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

The issue is definitely with Verizon's service- the question is did you install any extra software for your previous Internet Provider's service? You might need to uninstall it. But since you're on Windows 98, you're kind of in a catch-22 (it's unsupported) Do you have a laptop or 2nd machine with Windows XP that you could test Verizon's service with? Maybe have a friend bring one by? If it fails for them as well, then you're got more ammunition for your next call to Verizon.

Unfortunately Dell's tech support (or any other computer manufacturers') can't do anything to fix a problem at Verizon's end, no matter how diligent they are...

before everything, cable isn't any speedier than DSL. merely as with cable you pays for the different speeds of DSL. As to the Limewire subject, it may desire to be that Comcast is doing what's observed as throttling the relationship. in fact, they're saying that even however you're buying your bandwidth (velocity) you could not use it each and all of the time for P2P sharing. they don't seem to be the only business enterprise to do this so verify first with any ISP to work out in the event that they do throttle any connection. the different situation cable has a tendency to be afflicted by is community congestion. once I had cable information superhighway, my connection could sluggish to a pass slowly on the comparable time on a daily basis whilst people could be getting abode from artwork and start up surfing. it may velocity decrease back up in the late evening and into the day whilst people the place sound asleep or at artwork. I even have DSL for over 8 yrs now and characteristic not seen it sluggish nor have I ever been pissed off via it not being rapid adequate. good luck and satisfied surfing.

hack inside of that router through the gateway and see if you can change the firewall/security settings through the router. That's what's stopping you from visiting certain sites. Also, you may want to first check your proxy settings by going into your internet options and click on the connections tab, then click on LAN settings and make sure that you're set to auto detect and that you uncheck 'Use a proxy...'

Sounds like you got poor technician service. Call back. They should NEVER give up.

Also, if you have a pc under warranty with DELL (probably other makers too) you can call DELL's tech support and they will DEFINITELY fix the problem for you. I stayed on the phone for 1hr 45mins with one and though I was dozing off he did all of the work and fixed it very well.

Good luck.

Check the website for the DELL Community Forums too for answers. They also have tech guys there who will gladly give you free tech support.
