Oh, it's real all right but it's not quite what everyone thinks it is.

The fountain of youth was a misnomer for seaweed. When explorers found that the indigenous people seemed to be younger and more vibrant in health than they were at the same age, they began a quest for the secret of their youth or longevity. They never found it, but some believe in the Asian and South American cultures that the key was found in certain types of seaweed that they were eating. There were other speculations also, such as chewing on beetlenut or leaves of certain plants, but for all that searching only seaweed is found to contain all the essential properties to envigor and bring about health and elasticity to the skin cells. It is a widely used food in Asian countries, but not so much here in the U.S.A.. If you look at the quality of life and health among those that still eat seaweed as a base for their diet, you will find that they are much healthier and live longer more productive lives without all of the diseases that we have here. So, searching for the Fountain of Youth is Mythological in the sense that a Fountain does not exist, but rather a way of living and eating correctly will give you a more youthful appearance and health benefits for life, good luck on your search if you choose to still look for it.

Here...try thinking about it as a metaphor... the fountain of youth...has the ability to make people younger, keep them healthy, and make them live forever....while yes people have called the fountain of youth an actual fountain or body of water with that ability, in my personal opinion i think there were a few people who took it too literally....I think the real existing fountain of youth is science. with scientific advances everyday people are living longer healthier lives and can get surgeries done to look younger.
the whole fountain thing was probably a miscommunication...ya know some scientist talking about science joking how it was a metaphorical fountain of youth blah blah, the janitor was walking by, over heard a few things, and suddenly he's drunk at a bar going "DUDE! I HEARD THESE TWO SCIENTIST TALKIN ABOUT A FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!" then ya know.... a whisper down the ally effect, metaphorical to real thing...

At one time it was believed to be real and may have very well existed. But now it is nothing but a money making scam. However it is nice to think about.

Is it real? Think about it. You asked this under Mythology and Folklore. Not in Science and Mathematics. You've answered your own question.
