penguins do "fly" under the water

2007-08-17 06:44:05 · answer #1 · answered by Azzie 3 · 0 0

several fish species can walk. No TRUE penguin can fly through the air. However they can fly in water, meaning they move in the same fashion as other birds through air. There is a north American bird called an Auk (Puffins are related to Auks) that holds the same type of niche but flies. It looks much like a penguin but smaller.

No flying penguins these days. And "walking" fish have been around for millions of years.

This site has an interesting summary of fossil evidence for penguins.

No, penguins use their wings to propel themselves through water rather than air. Because water is much more dense than air, penguin wings are shorter and stouter than the wings of flying birds. Penguins are also much heavier than similar sized flying birds and have solid bones rather than weight-saving air-filled bones. While these characteristics enable penguins to efficiently "fly" through water, they have had to sacrifice the ability to fly in air to do so.

Well - technically they do fly - they just do it underwater :)
There are some close relatives of penguins that fly, though.

No, there is no type of penguin that can 'fly'. At least not one that I am aware of.
