It depends upon what you mean by Internet Security- that's a catch-all term used by some companies (like Symantec) for marketing purposes- it lumps different type of products together.

There are good free anti-virus programs like Avast & Active Virus Shield. You should definitely have Anti-Virus software running.

Ad-Aware is pretty good anti-spyware, which is different from anti-virus.

Firewall software is a 3rd category- it blocks unwanted network traffic. Windows XP and Vista have built-in firewalls with limited functionality. Zone Alarm is free, if you want a better software firewall.

AVAST Antivirus- http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html

The home version contains scanners for network, web, IM, and P2P connections. Even though the name says antivirus this program find adware, spyware, malware and protects you while on the internet. Works very well and completely free. Give it a try. What have you got to lose?
