It depends upon what you mean by Internet Security- that's a catch-all term used by some companies (like Symantec) for marketing purposes- it lumps different type of products together.
There are good free anti-virus programs like Avast & Active Virus Shield. You should definitely have Anti-Virus software running.
Ad-Aware is pretty good anti-spyware, which is different from anti-virus.
Firewall software is a 3rd category- it blocks unwanted network traffic. Windows XP and Vista have built-in firewalls with limited functionality. Zone Alarm is free, if you want a better software firewall.
