Do the potatoes actually appear on the surface or do you have to dig for them?

Wait until the potato plant is no longer flowering and little fruit are coming out. From then on you can start digging for the spuds. Every week waiting let them grow a bit more.

Sometimes the tops start to yellow. That is one indicator. Many of my relatives had a general idea based on the type of soil and the growing weather. From their informal rule of thumb they just looked at a calendar and said "Yeah, about next week" and they were always right. Spuds are pretty forgiving, unless you've grown potatoes in the same ground for more than two or three years, then you have blight problems and the pests get used to visiting there. Until you get that feel for it, dig a few and see. My grandfather used to say that there were two things in his garden he could always count on, potatoes and okra. He used to grow a variety of flowers around that kept bugs to a minimum, but you are going to have to consult some organic gardening books for those tricks. Many of those who had such old patterns of practice are long gone today, and I wasn't paying much attention when they tried to teach me. Sorry.

Hi Dee:
I'm afraid that you'll have to dig for them.
To determine if they're ready or not, just look deep into their eyes.
