Why are people so afraid to question social norms? Is the word "why" becoming taboo?

On what planet? More social 'norms' have been broken or changed in recent decades than probably ever before. I wasn't aware there was any general issue in either asking "why" or just doing as one wanted (providing others weren't harmed) and thinking 'to heck' what other people think.

There's nothing at all taboo about the word "why" and I don't recall there having been during my lifetime.

People question things everyday, that's part of what makes us human.
