Density is the number of items per unit.

Picture a room that is 10 feet square. Put 5 people in it. Now put 5 more people in it and the room is denser than before.

It also explains how two things that are the same size can have different weights.

It means your ability to use English grammer. Dense means that the mass per unit volume of some matter is high. In terms of grams and cc, water density is 1, iron is about 7, mercury is 13, and gold is 20.

Dense is a relative term that refers to how much stuff is jammed into a given volume. The higher the density for a given volume the more stuff that volume contains, whether it be atoms, popcorn, or people.

From an astronomical observation point-of-view 'dense' would refer to a larger-than-normal number of stars in a given field-of-view, as in a star cluster or star-forming nebula.

Or, it could refer to dust that blocks light from passing through.
