My PC does a routine virus scan EVERY NIGHT, when I am asleep. I generally do a defrag every month, whether it needs it or not. Windows updates are automatically scheduled to occur at 10AM on Tuesday, because they come out on the second Tuesday of the month, per Microsoft.

I don't do a lot of downloading, gaming and such so for me I don't need to run the maintenance cycles as often as others that have high computer usage. However, I still do the following:

- Windows Updates once a month (Patch Tuesday is always the 2nd Tuesday of each month)
- Complete system Antivirus scan once a week with custom scans such as scanning files received as soon as I download them and prior to opening.
- Complete system Antispyware scans once a week using Spybot S&D, SuperAntispyware and Adaware.
- Check for and enable new updates for SpywareBlaster every week.
- Clear all cache daily using ATF Cleaner
- Defrag once every 3-4 months
- Run ChkDsk (Check Disk at startup) once every 3-4 months
- Run SFC (System File Checker) once every 3-4 months

Well, my computer is set to automatically do virus scan every morning... I got a virus a while back so now I'm a bit paranoid.

I defragment when I remember to; like I'll go do it right now, but it's probably been atleast a month since I did it last. Though I think my computer may automatically do that too, because every time I go to defragment, it says it doesn't need to.

And doesn't your computer let you know when new Windows updates are available, when you're about to turn it off? If so, that's when I do them. When it tells me to.

I do all of it, I have automatic downloads for service packs Windows XP for my computer. I run Norton's once a month. I defrag every month at 3 am in the morning.

Then again I don't do any web browsing unless it's an official site. I don't open emails I don't know who the sender is. And I don't click on links people paste.

Routine Windows Updates: it notifies me whenever there is one, I download it, etc.
Defrag: Once a month for heavy usage.
Antivirus: Every single night. It's smart.
