He only played in 2 or 3 full games last season for the injured Roethlisberger. So the QB rating is a bit mis-leading.
I agree with most in here. He was playing with a poor team in Detroit. And, he did get screwed right before they released him. One game while he was still with Detroit, Ty Detmer was play against the Browns and threw 5 or 6 INTs and the coach STILL wouldn't put Batch in!!
To answer the question: Yes, he's too good to be a backup QB. All backup QBs want to be starters right? But, he's probably content where he is. He's making decent money, he's playing for his hometown team, and he doesn't have the pressure of a starting QB.

I LOVE Charlie Batch, but he was a starter in Detroit and didn't do too well, yeah it is Detroit. I don't know if you can really use the QB rating, he only started the first game and came in during the Falcons game when Ben suffered his second concussion. Charlie is probably one of the best back ups in the league (I can't remember what site, but someone had him in the top 5). I don't know if he's "too good" to be a back up quarterback, but I'm sure there are some teams that would give him a shot to be the starter.
Cheers!

Charlie Batch already was a starter in the league for quite a while, and he was very, very average. He's a perfect back-up QB, however...a veteran who won't lose many games for you, and can handle any system. With Pittsburgh's emphasis on running the ball and defense, they don't really need a 450 yard passer to win games. And don't get too excited about QB rating...it's the most overrated stat in sports, and if Batch had played 16 games, it wouldn't have stayed at 121.0, or anywhere close to it.

Honestly I'm a Steelers fan. I'm thrilled he wanted to come home and that the Steelers let him. He is from Homestead and lobbied the team to be allowed to join basically. So they said ok and he was made third string and was making league minimum. Well he was promoted to back-up and when his contract expired, before this season I believe, he was given the pay of a back-up. Now he is in his 10th year. He is getting a little old to become a starter, BUT he could play many more seasons off the bench. I say he is making the right move on that end. Could he be a starter elsewhere? If he wanted I think he EASILY could. Might not look as good though, because I think the chance would be someplace like Oakland would get him and not the best team. If he went to a good team then he could be a good starter.

Considering the teams without good QBs that will make him an offer. Yes. Pittsburgh would be wise to trade him before he becomes expensive. Hell, the Texans paid for Matt Schaub. I would assume a team would want Batch and pay him more than a team looking for a clipboard holder.
(No offense to the Steelers. Any team with a definite #1 QB, Colts or Patriots etc., would not pay any #2 QB as much as a #1 QB.)

I think Batch is a good QB. he used to start for Detroit a few years back. But the only reason why his rating is so high is because he played like 1 or 2 games last year. If he played the entire season his rating wouldnt be anywhere near top QBs like McNabb, Brady, and Petyon Manning.

There are some teams that Batch could probably start on. If I was Steeler fan I would just be glad we had him in a back-up roll. You could have guys like Craig Nall ( Buffalo ), Sage Rosenfels ( Houston ), or Cleo Lemon ( Miami ) as your back - up. If those team's starting QBs go down, their teams are done for the season. If Ben goes down, the Steelers could keep on rollin'.

He could be a decent starting QB but he couldn't put up those numbers for a full season. Being a backup means he comes into the game against a defense that prepared for Big Ben. They have 2 different styles which means its harder to prepare for both. If he was a starter teams would be preparing for him and his style of play.

No, he is a proven decent back up and he has also proved that he is not a starting QB. Charlie is fine for 2-3 games a year, nothing more.

Batch could probably start somewhere, but not in Pittsburg after Big Ben won the Super Bowl. Batch had plenty of time to show his stuff in Detroit. He was okay, but not the type of guy who is going to lead a team to the promised land.
