I have a male crowntail betta and I notice that from time to time, he rests on the bottom of the tank on the gravel and doesn't move much. When I move the tank to get his attention, he jolts up and starts swimming again.

Does my betta have health problems or is this common? What can I do?

This is actually common with bettas, there is no healthproblem with that
Get him a live plant, because bettas love to rest on them
And don't tip to much on the tank, it will only stress him out

Hope that helps
Good luck

Is the tank heated--if not he is probably just cold. Bettas tend to be very inactive if they are kept at temperatures that are too cold for them. If you don't already, do yourself a favor and add a heater to his tank. A fish that is a drab blob at 70 degrees may very well be a feisty colorful pet at 80 degrees. while they are hardy fish, and can survive in suboptimal conditions, keeping bettas at room temperature really does the fish--and yourself a disfavor (I know I'd rather have a fish that spends a lot of time swimming around and showing off...) If your fish is in a heated tank, he very well may be sick. Bettas , especially males, are not the most active fish--but they shouldn't be sitting on the bottom of the tank 24 hours a day. Often the first symptom a sick fish shows is inactivity. However like all creatures some bettas are more active than others. Also, all of my fish will usually lie at the bottom at night time.

Yes it is normal for bettas to rest.
You should get him a plant, a real growing plant. When purchasing a plant do not buy ones that show any signs of damage or that are in plastic containers--they won't last long.
Is it possible that your betta is depressed or lonely? I have found that my bettas do better when they are with other fish. As long as you purchase community fish, that aren't small enough to be eaten, and in a different family than the betta you will be fine.

It is very common for them to lounge around at times. It gets very tiring swimming with those long beautiful fins. I always have tall leafy fake plants in my Betta tanks to give them something to rest on. What size tank do you have him in? My Betta's are always moving and exploring the tanks. I have one in a 36 gallon community tank, a few in a 20 gallon, another 20 gallon with about 30 fry, and a 10 gallon with some females. Maybe your tank isn't large enough for him to explore??

If he's not showing any other signs of illness, then I'd say he's fine. Does he have any plants or other decorations to rest on? Bettas were selectively bred to increase the size of their finnage, making them poor swimmers. They tend to rest and be lazy more than swim, because their long fins make it difficult. Get your little guy something cute to rest on. And don't tap on the tank too much or else he'll get stressed and then that will lead to him getting sick.

Well, how long and how often does it do it? I would think is normal for a betta to do that. How big is the tank?
