Hi
With your first babies, what was the item you just never needed?

With me it was the changing mat. I changed her on my sofa, dont know why people use them! lol! I never got mess on the sofa, but then again she never peed with her nappy off like some babies always manage!!

Any comments! Might make it useful for new mums to have a list of "NOT ESSENTIAL" items!

Wipe warmer LOL that is so funny...

I used the baby tub once.

I also didn't use the silly hooded towels, or baby washcloths.

I used the stroller about 3 times. I wore him in a wrap until he was big enough to sit in the shopping cart, and wear him still when there is no cart.

Diaper Genie, it just collects dust and I stubbed my toe on it alot.

Never used the "changing table" it was easier to do it on the bed or couch or even the floor.

The bouncy chair didn't work for my baby, though alot of mums swear by them.

I didn't use a monitor, but my son co-sleeps...

Didn't get a bunch of silly toys either, not until 3 months at least.

NO BABY EINSTEIN VIDEOS... Besides they're coming out that those actually delay baby's development. Go figure.

EDIT TO ADD:

the whole breastpump thing... I wouldn't say run out and get one RIGHT NOW, you'll find out if you need one or not. And most hospitals have hospital-grade pumps they can loan you. Those are SOOOO MUCH BETTER than the little hand-operated jiggies, or even the cheap "battery operated" ones!! I spent $250 on a Medela Pump In Style when my son was 2 months old. I've been using it on and off ever since!! I even had to pump exclusively for 3 months, and that was a lifesaver! Plus, going back to work you have to pump at least once a day... So yeah, a pump is important if you're going to work or ever want to give your baby expressed milk for any reason.

Carseat/stroller. If you go out alot the travel systems are great because then you never have to wake the little one to put him in the stroller. Diapers and wipes obviously. Dont buy to much of one size because you never know how long they will wear what for. If you are going to nurse buy some breast pads and some lanolin for sore nipples. If you are going to bottlefeed then you will need supplies. I recommend not buying a bunch of the same formula before your baby comes though because their is a possibility that they wont be able to tolerate that kind or brand. Lots of onesies, LOTS! Little babies have a lot of poo explosions or barfs. Lots of receiving blankets. For the barfs! And for swaddling. This is not an essential but a sling or a wrap are amazing for the baby who loves to be held, or for the mommy who loves to hold. I find wraps are the best. Also I think that its good to have at least one sort of baby apparatus whatever you choose so you have a place to put them down thats safe if you have to attend to something that you cant hold them while doing. My son LOVED his swing. We had the Fisher Price baby Papasan one. Its good because they are in a reclined position so you can use it right away. A thermometer, bulb syringe, medicine dropper, etc Standard stuff in a baby health kit. A good size bag to lug around all this stuff. Whether its a big purse or a diaper bag it doesnt matter just make sure its something you will want to carry for a few months. As they get older I found my bag got smaller. Thats all I can think of. Everything else is extra, but if its your first some times its fun to shop for extras. I co-slept pretty much from day one although we did have a bassinet. I changed him on the couch or the bed. We had a baby tub but I hated it. I had my son 6 weeks early so we didnt have alot of extras, and I discovered you dont really need them.

It's interesting reading the responses because some of my essential items are others non essential.
I couldn't have survived the first 4 months without our Fisher Price Aquarium cradle swing, or the two travel size ones, and we are still using our Primo bathtub (daughter is now almost 2).
For nonessential items I would say:
-receiving blankets
-the infant bouncy chair was a waste of money because she only used it once and never enjoyed it
-snowsuits
-stroller as part of a travel system (if I knew better I would have just gotten a Snap N Go and went right to an umbrella stroller after she grew out of the infant seat)

I received a bottle warmer with a little section in the back that you could keep the bottles in (with an ice pack). Even though I followed directions, my bottles would always come out too cold or too hot. Also, it only warmed the bottoms of the bottles and when I went to use my vent-aire bottles, the water that collected around the bottom rings would burn me. Ouch! I also had a drying rack for bottles that I found to be useless and took up too much space on the sink.

I loved the wipe warmer. It was great for my baby girl in the winter. We live in Illinois. But I would never have gotten it for my sons. What I never used was the bottle warmer that sits on your night stand. i was so tired at night that I just breast fed her. Even after she went on the bottle I was still breastfeeding at night. I think I used the bottle warmer 5 times. Waste of money!

I made a point of using my changing mat, just so my little girl got accustomed to getting her bum changed!! No, the item i never used, or ever want to get used to again was the breast pump! What a total waste of time and effort! Ive never felt so dejected and useless in my life! Spending an hour or more pumping away to produce..wait for it..a millimetre of milk!! Even i kno when to give up!

A car bottle warmer that plugged in to the cigarette lighter socket-it never worked enough to even make the bottle luke warm. Also, I bought one of those baby carriers that you strap to your front, my little one was 8lbs 10oz so it killed my back to have her in that and i sent it back to the company. I wouldn't have a changing table again, i just changed her on the floor or sofa (like you), althoug i always used the changing mat.

Hi. Mine had to be a dressing gown for a newborn. Can you imagine after the bath messing about drying baby, then putting gown on then babygrow!!
Such a lot of hassle. Was a nice thought as a present but totally useless.

Mum to 16yr, 13yr and 6 month old boys.

Wow I got through 2 changing mats with my son! But then as soon as his nappy came off he was guaranteed to pee!!

I think I only used my baby bath once - it was so much easier just using the big bath with one of this sponge things to lay him on! And the top and tail bowl what was the point in that!!

Also those door swing things when I put my boy in it he just used to hang there looking really uncomfortable - I much preferred to put him in his bouncy chair and then his baby walker!

I actually use the changing mat all the time-- i have one that folds up and goes in the diaper bag, and i use it as a "courtesy" if i am changing her at someone's house-- none of my friends have babies and would probably be tripped out if I didn't "protect" their stuff!!

Most unused item-- the playtex bottles. I ended up hating them and only use AVENT bottles, and I had registered for the playtex ones so I got all these bottles and liners i dont use!

Also dont use all themusical/vibrations thing that goes with her boppy chair.
