Ovulation is when an ovary releases an egg. The egg enters the fallopian tube, where it stays for about 24 hours. We say that a woman is ovulating during this time; it is the period when it is possible for her to become pregnant. If there is sperm in the fallopian tube, it may fertilize the egg. This is called conception. The fertilized egg then travels down the fallopian tube and embeds itself into the lining of the uterus. Once it attaches here, a woman is considered pregnant, though most tests will still take another couple of weeks to detect the pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilized, it passes out of the body through the vagina. About two weeks later, the uterus sheds the lining that it had prepared for the egg; that's what a period is.
