actually the best time to water a lawn is in the 5:00am time range as it will prevent "ROOT ROT" disease ! It is true that you have to water deep so the roots will grow deep to reach the water, and if you just wet the lawn and not water deep the roots will remain in the first few inches of the soil and when the weather gets really hot the sun will burn up your lawn because the roots will get to hot from the sun. Also over watering a lawn will choke out the oxygen from the soil which will kill your lawn. New sod should be kept wet and not allowed to dry to much because it doesn't have an established root system because when it is harvested most of the root system is left behind. So until the root system starts to establish itself you should probably water both in the morning and evening until you see it establishing and then only in the AM.

Evening is actually a better time, as the water doesn't evaporate so quickly, so your grass is happier. However, DO NOT water every day! This makes for shallow roots, which will lead to wilt. Weak, wilted sod is subject to weed and fungi infection. You want to water less frequently, but for a longer period. Try every other day, or three times a week, and lay about 2' - 3" of water down. The dirt should show as damp (not wet) 1"-2" beneath the surface. This makes for strong, long roots, and tough, healthy grass that chokes out weeds.

Always water in the evenings. Water has a chance to soak down to the roots. And by all means keep that new sod watered. It will help establish roots into the old soil. Every other day should be good enough.

It's absolutely OK to water in the evening. That's probably the best time of day as it allows the water to soak into the ground and be absorbed by the grass, whereas watering in the morning or midday means that at least some of the water will be lost to evaporation.

Watering in the evening is fine, and I agree with e1 else on soaking the roots...and not watering early because of evaporation.
Don't worry about root rot in SC right now. It is too hot for any type of root rot to come alive! Happy watering!

When its hot in the summer I always water at night-the lawn stays wet longer and you use less water to keep it green. The only negative involved is that you may get a few mushrooms in your lawn, however they will go away as soon as they dry out. In the spring and fall dont water as often since you wont need to as it wont dry out as fast anyway.

Yes, I always water right after sun down. It gives your lawn time to absorb the water instead of it evaporating from the heat of the sun.

Watering at night is fine, OR early morning. It's not wise to water in the heat of the day anyway because it burns off before it can soak in. Watering at night gives it a chance to soak in before the sun comes up.

i'm in sc too. I know what you mean about it being too hot in the afternoon to water. Watering in the evening should be fine. That's what I've been doing.
