There are changes coming even if the Yankees DO make the playoffs.
Abreu will be a free agent and will not be resigned. Shelley Duncan will be given chance to play RF.
Clemens is gone.
Pettitte might be too. He has an option for 2008 in his contract.
Farnsworth will be traded.
Either Giambi or Damon will be traded. Giambi makes more sense because Damon could still be used as a 4th outfielder.
Hughes and Chamberlain will both be in the starting rotation.
Mussina will also be (unfortunately) unless he retires (doubtful).
Posada might go, Mariano will stay.
A-Rod will stay, contract will get renegotiated.
These things will all happen whether or not the Yankees make the postseason.

The New York Yankees could potentially have a different looking team next year.
Alex Rodriguez, if he opts out of his contract as expected by many, will no longer be a New York Yankee. Brian Cashman expressed today that if A-Rod opts out of his contract, the Yankees will not chase after him and try to make a better offer. If they do, they lose the twenty-one some odd million dollars that they get from the Rangers.
Phil Hughes should be a mainstay in the Yankees rotation next year. There's a possibility he may not pitch all year, but I don't see that as being likely. Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain will *definitely* be mainstay's in the Yankees rotation by at least '09. Chamberlain's future is still as a starter regardless of him being in the bullpen right now.
Some possible offseason moves:
Jason Giambi - The Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim are looking for a big bat and they've expressed interest in Giambi over time. Not too long ago there were talks of Giambi being traded to the Angels for Jose Molina (who the Yankees recently acquired) and Chone Figgins. I think the interest in Giambi could pick up now that he's "free" from punishment by the Commissioner, Bud Selig, but I don't see him moving this offseason, although always possible.
Johnny Damon - I'm not sure if anyone has any big interest in him, but the Yankees have been shopping him for a while now. He hasn't been what they expected. Why they ever picked him up, I'm unaware.
Jorge Posada - Posada seems like he wants to stay in New York, but will the price be right? The Mets seem to have some interest in Posada as well as Ivan Rodriguez.
Kosuke Fukudome - I'm not sure if you've heard of his name before, but he is a Free Agent coming to the MLB from Japan. He plays for the Chunichi Dragons. The Yankees have reportedly had interest in him, although I don't see him signing with them.
Bobby Abreu - He has a $16 million option for next year, and at the beginning of the season, it didn't look as if the Yankees would pick it up. He has brought his numbers up considerably and perhaps may stay now.
Johan Santana - If he opts out of his contract with the Twins, the Yankees and Mets could potentially be two front runners to make an offer. The Yankees could really use someone like Santana. Any team could, really. To be honest, if they make the best offers, it could come down to: does he want to bat or not?
Kyle Farnsworth - Perhaps on the move to Detroit? Detroit has shown interest in him over time. Whether he goes to Detroit or not, he won't be back next season.
Joe Torre - On the move? I doubt it. If he does get fired, I would hope that Joe Girardi or Don Mattingly becomes the new manager. Girardi obviously has more experience.
Mariano Rivera - They've already said they will definitely try and re-sign him... his recent struggles won't affect that decision.

I don't think he'll do much. I mean, even George realizes that missing the playoff once in 12 years isn't too bad. If they play well the rest of the season it may be okay even if they miss the playoffs, considering the hole they started in with 5 starting pitchers on the DL. If they collapse it might be different.
But George is not in very good health. I don't think he's got that anger in him anymore.
We'll see though.

For you people that say "release" any player... they CAN'T.
This isn't the NFL.
They would still be responsible for their contract.
They will NOT release a player for nothing.
I think Giambi, Abreau, Clemens, Farnsworth, and A-Rod will be gone. A-Rod by opting out. Giambi by trade. Abreau by free agency. Clemens will retire (finally). Farnsworth will be traded as well.
Also, if Mariano continues to have troubles, I don't think the Yanks will try real hard to match offers for him. I still think the Yanks will offer him a raise, but not as much as everyone else. Depends on who else is available on the market.
The player they will make a major push for will be Santana. He'll instantly be the ace for the team.

He's not going to be a happy man. Half the team will probably be gone anyway. We need some pitching for next year.
