He's about a year old and recently, he won't eat much. He'll just drink water and eat some treats that I give him to encourage him to eat. I'm thinking that since the weather is hot he'll just eat a little and still be full. We also have a female dachshund that is on her period(we're gonna get her spayed). Is that the problem? We also have another male dachshund but he's fine and eats everything we put in his plate. Please help.

well, thank you to all who answered. my chihuahua has started eating already, and now he eats 3 times a day. I think it was the female that was distracting him. This question doesn't expire until tomorrow, so if anyone else has something to add please do so. Thank you.

I have a Chi and I have noticed this as well. So long as your Chi is not sleeping all the time or lethargic, you shouldn't have a problem. He may be just too hot too eat. Try feeding him later at night. I also noticed that if my Chi doesn't eat at all, the next day he will throw up. I watch him quite closely, so if he doesn't eat, I give him a bit of milk before bed. At least then he has something in his tummy.
They do have a delicate system and that's why you should never feed them table scraps. Just as weight gain is detrimental so is weight loss. They haven't much to lose because they are an 'energy efficient' dog.
If you have a female in heat that may well be your problem. She just smells WAY better than anything you could offer him right now.

I think it's possible that your pooch had mono. I'm glad he's all better, but you'd better get the shortie spayed before he decides to diddle her and pass it on!
