The connection fails when there is some sort of confusion between IP's or something, so I often have to unplug and plug back in my router to regain connection. How to I ping wirelessly to not have to do this?

well you can ping the router by opeining a command line (ie.. Start > Run > cmd) then type ping 192.168.1.1 (or whatever the router IP address is)

but that isn't going to do anything but tell you if you have a connection to the router and if its responding.

If you get a IP conflict, ping won't fix that, if you use static IP on your PCs make sure if you have more then 1 PC that they are all different and make sure you turn off DHCP on the router.

If you use DCHP, make sure you don't have a static IP set on 1 of the PCs

Go to Network Connections > right-click the wireless connection > status > support tab > click "details" and find the default gateway address. (I suppose you could go to the command prompt and type "ipconfig", too. Either way works.)

From the command prompt, type "ping" and enter the default gateway address; this will ping your router.

Merely pinging the router will not restore your connection, however. Something else is happening.

If you are using windows xp:

Start > Run > cmd (enter)
This will bring up a black box.
Type in ping 192.168.0.1 (replace number with the router ip address)
Then press enter, this will ping the address 4 times.

go to start > run > cmd > ipconfig
see what your default gateway is.
Then type ping and the default gateway number and press enter.
This will test connectivity but it wont solve the issue if there is no connection rebooting the router is always a good start if you are having a connection problem

you can follow these steps:

start-->run--> cmd

now you will get a command window

type : ipconfig

you will get an ip address, subnet mask and a default gateway address.

note that gateway address, its your router's ip address(usually it is 192.168.1.1).

then in command window, type:

ping 192.168.1.1

check whether you are getting four replies without any loss

to chek whether connected to internet:

ping yahoo.com

this will ensure whether you are connected to internet.
