Because unlike team sports where there are limited participants, tennis has a lot of players per tournament and it will take forever to have a round robin format. Imagine a Grand Slam with 128 players playing a round robin.

There is the Masters season ending tournament where only the top 8 players may enter, and they have a round robin system in the first round. The equivalent in womene's tennis has the top 16 and that's already too many for round robin; they use a conventional elimination system instead.

I don't know the official reason that the system was vetoed. I think it was something about it being overly complex and prone to failure. Whatever the reason, I for one am glad they abandoned it. It is a ridiculous idea. The supposed point was to preserve the top seeds in a tournament so that fans would get more of a chance to see their faves compete. A stupid idea and unfair to boot. If a player is really worthy of a high ranking, he shouldn't need a lifeline. If he goes out and gets beaten early, then tough. Hopefully he'll learn to try harder the next week. It also undermines the potential for upsets. If a top player like a Federer or a Nadal goes out in the first round, it might be disappointing, but the result should stand. Obviously I, like everyone want to see the top guys play each-other in finals, but this should happen because they are on good form, not because a system or format has engineered it to happen.
