Anyone know where to go in Illinois or a connecting state, for an all day road trip? My husband & I both have Harleys and want to take a road trip during Labor Day Weekend. I've heard of the Great River Road, been to Moonshine, and other places. Just need some ideas where there's nice scenery and stops along the way.

You might want to check out Galena, or the Starved Rock campground area. If you're near the WI border, there's some really good riding in SW Wisconsin, around the New Glarus area.

If you're into such stuff, Hannibal MO is a cool place to check out. Old buildings, Mark Twain stuff, a cave, antique stores and you can have a relaxing boat ride and evening meal on the river. The Great River Road on the Missouri side south of Hannibal has beautiful scenery and is a good road. On either side of the river are apple orchards which may or may not have apples this year depending upon how badly the late spring freeze hurt them. Fresh apples and cider are hard to beat. If you're into riding barges, take the barge ride across the Illinois River at Hardin, IL on route 100. The rest of rt 100 into Alton, IL is a great ride. On the Great River road southwest of town is a recreation of the man eating, dragon like Piasa Bird that Indians painted on the bluff. Watching barges go through the locks at Alton is neat and the new river bridge is a beautiful piece of architecture. At the old cemetary in north Alton is the grave and life sized statue of Robert Wadlow, the worlds tallest man at 8' 11" and 490 pounds, his size is truely something you must see to believe. In nearby St. Louis is the Gateway Arch as well as a number of other sights to see. South of St. Louis is St. Genevieve, MO, the first settlement west of the Mississippi with restored French styled houses. The road south to Cairo, IL is a beautiful ride (I did that last year) through rolling farmland and wooded areas. The broad empty streets, vacant buildings and long line of non-opertional traffic lights in Cairo is a good example of the deterioration of towns after the local economy goes down the tubes.
