china town, pier 39, Golden gate bridge, Alcatraz, take a cable car around, you could get a city pass http://www.sanfranciscochinatown.com/store/citypass.html

museum of modern art
exploratorium
academy of sciences and steinhart aquarium
shopping @ Union square http://www.baycityguide.com/images/maps_pdf/ggpark_Union_Square_map.pdf

golden gate park

Lombard street (if you run outta ideas)
or the Castro if you can handle it, but I dont think anything fun or major is happing inthe Castro that weekend. You'd have to look it up.

Get a drop off in China town. Have fun looking around at the shops there. Jump on the many cable cars which go thru China down- take one going to Fisherman's Wharf and eat some fresh seafood and enjoy the excitement in that area.
Take a light jacket or sweatshirt and a ball cap(weather can turn cool very fast) Get back to the airport in plenty of time.

There's no chance you'll be able to show up on a saturday and get alcatraz tickets (it's boring anyway so no loss).

Take Bart (our "tube") from the airport to powell street, from there you can walk through Union Sq. and chinatown (grant street). Continue up grant street and you'll come to an italian neighborhood called north beach.

If you want to see pier 39/the wharf, at powell street come above ground and look for the F market (an old fashioned street car). It gets packed coming back so make sure you leave your self a couple of hours minimum to get to the airport.

If you want to see neighborhoods, you can transfer from bart to muni metro (also underground but one level above bart) and take the K or L or M to church street (interesting shops and restaurants) or Castro street (gay district, again interesting shops and restaurants). You can also get off bart at either 24th and Mission or 16th and Mission and see a hispanic neighborhood.

Hope this helps, have a good visit.

have a piknik in golden gate park...
the chinese tea garden...
shopping in union square is quite and experience...
see a movie at the metreon on a huge screen...
visit north beach for some simply divine gelato...

if you are gonna hit up north beach i HIHGLY reccomend going to laugria bakery.. they make the best foggica bread (i cant spell it right) in the world. ut you ahve to make it kinda early in the morning since they closethe shop when they run out of bread. maybe early afternoon too. then its just a short drive down the pier 39 from there where you can walk around and sight see... or visit alcatraz

please, do yourself a favor and don't go to alcatraz. it will take all day and it's boring.

go to golden gate park, and go to a couple different neighborhoods for food and coffee.
north beach is italian, with lots of strip clubs.
the mission is for artists, lesbians, and hipsters.
the haight is still the haight. hippies and hipsters.
the castro is where the gay men are.
the marina and union street is where the yuppies and some upscale shopping is.
union square near downtown is the theater district, and has some world class shopping.

and if you like museums, there some great ones, including the MOMA downtown, and several museums in golden gate park.
