I don't think I would either, just to respect their privacy. How cool is that that you saw him? :D I think you did the right thing.

It's Morality vs. Fanaticism.
If they are there, they are there to perform service inside that institution... they're not expecting to have to act like a celebrity or star athlete. It's usually nice to see them, but privacy is a good thing (however, if you saw David Ortiz, I would be disappointed if you didn't visit with Papi). If they sign a few autographs, they lose touch of why they were at that place in the first place.
I would have approached them, only if they were just staring into space... demanding autographs, not really, unless it was okay with the athlete or celebrity.
Now for the fanaticism argument.
Sure, "Yuke" is a star on the Red Sox, and a mighty fine player, he's someone that has more potential then he knows what to do with. If you approach him, you could have a story for decades to come, especially if his career vaults into "hall of fame calibur"
I would... well the fan part of me would.

Where in Plymouth? Just wondering if you saw him down by the jetty or getting scream at Peaceful Meadows ... I think you did the right thing leaving him alone. You'll regret it yes, but it is best to let him be and just know that he enjoys the same great area of Mass as you.
Also, anyone read the answer submitted by Joel H? That like gay? wanted to make eye contact with Youk. And what do you know, he's a Yankees fan to boot.

When I lived in Boston I used to see a lot of them all over. I would not disturb them when they are eating but if I saw them leaving and could time it right I would go up to the on the way out and say hi, shake their hand and carry on a small conversation. I never asked to get autographs because their demeanor always changes at that point, I like to keep it as a good experience.

Not during their meal; that's really rude. Trying to intercept while they're leaving, that's okay.
If you just wanna say "hi" or general well-wishing, that only takes a second. If you want to ask a question or two, first ask if he has a minute. If he says No, respect that.
If you plan on hitting on him for an autograph, have pen and item ready for signing. If he says No to this as well, also respect that. (You can be sneaky and have your kids ask, POLITELY. That's harder to refuse.)

I probably would have done the same. I saw Pat Benatar standing on the sidewalk at Hampton Beach with some really big guy and I just stood there watching till she walked away. She could really rock!

Bring your autographs sign as your Red Sox stuffs. Kevin can know that you're Red Sox fan. As he can sign your autographs. You can say hi to him as he would be happy to talk to u and u can ask him to sign the autographs.
I would like to going with him as he woould give me the tickets for baseball game as I can sit behind the home plate to watch him playing the bat and defense at first base.

No baseball player would be in my city to far away, but has over 1,000,000 people. San Jose is 45 minutes away from San Francisco, but no baseball players are even from my area except for Kevin Frandsen and Barry

Definitely. However, you never see baseball players in Indianapolis. And I am south of there. But if the chance came up, I would make a quick hello. Let them know you appreciate and enjoy watching them.

Nah, not if they're eating lunch. I think it would be rude to bother someone in the middle of a meal, thats much different then if you see them walking on the street.
If I saw Willie Randolph eating lunch, I'd smash his face into his food and pour his drink over his head.
