The tree bent in the wind but it did not break. However there is a crack about 8 inches above the base that is approx 3 inches wide and 6 inches long. I do not want it to be damaged by disease or weather. Can I apply a wrap or some kind of sealant to save the tree? It is probably 10 years old and I would hate to loose it.

We did really well with an arborist who used a steel cable to tie our maple back together. It has lasted over 10 years now and looks better than it did before the storm broke it.

you need the help of a good arborist.... but I think the tree would survive with the right help and some way of assuring it won't be bent again by the wind unitl it's healed.... guy lines or something.... if the tree, being straightened up some, then comes closer together at the crack, there should not be a need to paint anything on it or do anything else.... just getting it closer together , it should be able to heal itself... the problem I see is that it's open to disease and insects right now and you need to see that it's not attacked in that way .... call the arborist... get a suggestion of one from your County Extension Office.... spend a little to save a lot!...

Why not try? What do you have to lose except your tree and some time? I'd refuse to cut it down until it is truly dead. I'd check with a nursery or a tree expert to find out what might work best. Or look it up in the library. Trees and Shrubs books should give you some information about how to protect the tree. Since it bent, I'd definitely get something to wrap it and stake it out to take the pressure off it.

It will "take" again if carefully taped up and supported. Tape it as tight as possible until it heals.
I lifted a small tree that was broken 6" above ground level, supported it with a stake, and bound it very tight, it healed up , and after a while I was able to remove the stake.
