If you like dark comedies "Happiness of the Katakuris" is really funny ("Katakuri no Shiawase" in Japanese) and "Kagi no Aji" is good too.
If you're looking for inspirational drama try "Ikiru" or "Afterlife"
Tear jerker = "The Sea is Watching",
Beat Takeshi has made some really good movies including "Zatoichi", "Hanabi" (really violent), and Kikujiro(also Kikujiro no Natsu).
"Ronin" is a good action movie.
If you're looking for really scary horror, catch "Audition".
In the sweet love story catagory you should see the original (Japanese) "Shall we Dance".
In serious anime I also recommend "Tokyo Godfathers" about the homeless, and "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" (Spirited Away in English) from studio Gibli (but ANYTHING from them is good).
Finally, there are always the classics; "Seven Samurai" and "Yojimbo", for example.
There are a lot of good Japanese movies out there. I hope you check them out!

CHAAAA, Hayao Miyazaki is a genius!~~ XD you should check out: Howl's Moving Castle ****(based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones which is AMAZING btw) Princess Mononoke *** Kiki's delivery Service Castle in the Sky My neighbor Totoro ** Nausicaa of the Vally of the Wind *** Whisper of the Heart * ((miyazaki's newest film is called 'Ponyo on the Cliff' and is sopposed to be really good- but i havent seen it yet)) Miyazaki's son also made a move called: Tales from Earthsea (i personally didn't like the plot very much but the animation itself is awesome)

...defintely give "Versus", "Audition" and "Ichi, the Killer" a good viewing; with alternately very compelling, suspenseful, horrific and action-packed storylines...and chuck-ful of the raw and viceral ultra-violence you appear to be seeking...
...so bloody, in fact, you might end up taking a shower, imemdiately after viewing!!!
...if it's gut-munching zombies you seek, definately check out "Stacy", "Junk" and "Wild Zero"; all equally compelling, action-packed and ultra-violent...
...for definately raw and viceral serial killer flavor, you've got "Entrails of a Beautiful Woman", "Entrails of a Virgin", and "Evil Dead Trap" series...
...finally, should you perhaps be interested in something so over-the-top ultra-violent, with some of the most disturbing visuals you'll lay your eyes upon, defintely seek out the contraversial and infamous "Guinea Pig" series...
