He wrote books so he is a author and a screenwriter. Not sure what an auteur is or what you would compare his films to.

Well, in the first place, let me argue with the question. "Prove" he's an auteur? That's a matter of opinion! Ron Howard might be an auteur also, to some film buffs.

An auteur is a director who has a particular style that is reflected in all of his films. Frankly, I think Spielberg is a stretch unless you break out his sci-fi/fantasy genre stuff (ET, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones) from his serious stuff (Color Purple, Schindler's List).

If you do that, you might find a few things that Spielberg ALWAYS does in each genre. Those persistent stylistic choices--those little tricks in the plot to create a climax, the predominant themes and concerns, the use of camera angles--those are what define an auteur.

But any conclusion about who's an auteur is arguable, not proven.

Steven Spielburg is no auteur!

Steven Spielburg is a production director and his films are popular and makes money - and that's it! He has done nothing original nor visionary. In fact Stanley Kubrick wrote in his memoirs that he did not care for Steven Spielburg and found him annoying.

Read the biographies of Stanley Kubrick and what he wrote and felt about Steven Spielburg.

I'm doing something similar in my film studies class at college. I'm struggling to find websites on the auteur that I'm doing which is Stanley Kubrick but I did find www.IMDB.com the most useful because you can search for your director then go into the link for their mini biography and there's a section on the directors trademarks and it's trademarks which make a director an auteur so just pick out the trademarks listed on the website and see which of them you see in the Spielberg films which you're wanting to look at. I hope this gives you some ideas for your essay =)
