You need to "Format" the old HDD. By formatting, every cluster will be marked as available for writing to. Once formatted, install your OS and it should work fine. If you have a problem "Formatting" it, take it out and take it to a friends place and piggy back it (insert it into his PC as a second drive). He can now get access to it through his C:\\ Drive. He just clicks on "My Computer" and "Right" clicks on D:\\ Drive, which should be yours. He then select "Format". Once it's formatted, remove it and put it back into your PC and install your OS.

You could try a utility that wipes the entire hard disk (just go to the maker of the HD's website and find the utility to wipe it).
