Issac Newton was not given to false modesty. He became an intellectual giant in later years, but in earlier years was accurately accused of scientific fraud by Robert Hooker. It was Thomas Halley who rescued his from an ordinary life by forcing his to prepare his Principia. After that great work, no one dared challenge him again during his lifetime.

Newton competed with Factio in the descritption of the cause of gravity. However Fatio was his close friend,therefore he did not wish argue . He just refused to give any further explanation as far as the cause of motion and gravitation.
However the Ground work to determine the equation of the Gravity energy between two bodies had been undertaken, way before Newton came up with his formula of Gravity force(weight).

Newton beleived in Alchemy. He thought he could turn lead into gold. An analysis of hairs from his head has proven that he suffered from mercury poisoning and that he went literally mad and that's not splitting hairs. In his later years he was made Master of the Royal Mint and set the standards for composition and weights of British coinage.
