I have a Dodge Ram van 1500 conversion with a 318 engine. I need this van to tow 6000 pounds comfortably. The rear is geared at 355.

Is there anything (other than a bore job) I can do to the 318? More importantly, what does it take to get a 360 or greater in the van?

I have found the 318 tows my rig well until we get to a stiff hill. Then it is challenged.

Let me know if I need to provide more data!

Thanks for the help.

So we have determined that the 318 is not the way to go. I am not trading for a truck. Can anyone tell me what it takes to get a 360 in place of the 318???

Thanks

I hear you Jack! I did the best thing I could in solving the problem by getting a trailer with dual axle commercial rating and commercial trailer brakes and controls. This could stop the van if the brakes fail. I don't like it but this is what I have to work with.

Never put hotter plugs in an engine calibrated to run with no lead fuel, fuel injection or a throttle body. The ground electrode will get too hot making it expand causing the porcelain around it to break. Hotter range plugs cause the gap area to glow in the combustion chamber. On the compression stroke this could cause ping, knocking and pre-ignition. When this happens under load (pulling a trailer) pistons and exhaust valves take a terrible beating.
A 360 motor will certainly get the job done with no trouble. You have a nice final drive ratio but any ratio clear down to 3.90 would be better for pulling that much weight. Search the net for a new ring and pinion for your van. You'll feel like you have 25 extra horsepower with the addition of a cold air box a K&N filter and a more free flowing muffler and or exhaust system.

The cost isn't worth it you can put performance parts on to increase the power, Dual exhaust more carb or re jet cold air intake, check on dodge forum for ideas that work. Down shift an turn up more Rpm.Seems like your expecting a lot out of the 318. =6000 lbs is beyond the towing capacity??

Better intake and carb on the 318, as well as electric water pump, and electric fans.

Hotter plugs - silicone wires

Maybe a MSD ignition

I like the other answers so just as an add on - after you do all of that and get those 6000lbs up that hill - what about the braking system going down that hill. good luck
