Your character is your moral essence. Self-preservation is at the very root of this.

To an extent, yes. Enough not to be reckless. Too much can be bad though if it lets fear and caution consume them. As part of one's character, I don't really view it as 'self-preservation', I see it more in terms of fearful or reckless, and of course, varying shades in between.

self preservation is an instinct.If it is not there he may be abnormal and perhaps anti social.
