I have completed what I understand to be the main storyline by defeating the elite four, now what?
Do I have to beat 100 people in the battle tower to progress further and search the other areas of the island that the battle tower is on?
Or is there something I have forgotten to do which will allow me to continue exploring the map?

Well, a WHOLE punch of new pokemon will soon hit the map.
Professor Oak is now availalbe and you can open the national pokedex once you have SEEN every other pokemon in the game.
You can now sail to two new islands from the two port towns.

go to Snowpoint City and get on the boat there and you'll be going to the fight area (where the battle tower is) or if you want, and you need the National Dex, first go to Sandgem Town and to the professors place and talk to him (keep in mind after you beat the elite four, your supposed to see every pokemon in shinneoh [well if you battled each and every trainer]) and after you get the ND and the PokeRader from Professor Oak (he comes in after you saw every pokemon) go to Dawn's house (in same city) and talk to her sister so she'll tell you a route and a pokemon name. (keep in mind that you need the ND for this) go to the route and search for that pokemon.
basicly you need the National Dex after you beat the E4. so if you follow the above directions... you'll be fine : )

you have to see all the sinnoh pokemon then u get the national dex and beat the battle tower 100 times in a row catch all the pokemon and thatz basically it

Well actually theres tons to do just get the natioenal dex and go catch the other legendarys use pal park to transfer go here for more

you dont have to beat the 100 people...theres 2 routes to get through after you get off th boat..right as you get off th boat go up and there should be a building you can go through to get to the next area or you can kep going to the right and surf
