The father died and leave 17 horses to his 3 sons. In the testament it says; the eldest son should get 1/2 of the total number of horses, . . the second son should get 2/3 of whatever is left over the eldest son, and the third son should get 2/3 of whatever is left over the second son.
And so they follow the will of the deceased father, and everybody is contented . . . . and there were no dead horses brought with them.
How is did they do it. How horses did each son get?

Just add 1 more horse.

First son will get (18 / 2) = 9 horses
Second son will get ((2 / 3) * 9) = 6 horses
Third son will get ((2 / 3) * 3) = 2 horses

Total horses that the sons get = 9 + 6 + 2 = 17
