It is seen as a boost to national awareness. The rest of the world will be there and can see their system and how great it is. It is their way of showing off the best parts of their country and being good hosts. It will bring in millions of people and their money. It is a chance for them to make a political statement.

Why does anyone want to host the games? National pride, love of the Olympics, cultural boost, financial boost. . .all the reasons any European or US city would want to host.

China forecasted that her capital, Beijing, would be ready to host the Olympic games!!!! It was at least 15 years ago!

Where else do you get live targets for rifling and javalin throwing. They want to show that they don't only massacre their citizens for fun, but that they can also do if for sport. Oh, and then there's the not-so-thought-through idea that other countries would respect them more and think of them as a country no longer worth being laughted at. So far, only part one and two seem to be coming through very well
