Good advice in the first three answers. Particle board (and OSB) does not paint well. Primer, sealer, oil base... all good choices. Since no paint will look really good without something like 10 coats, have you considered using another material to cover the particle board? Laminate, skins, fabric?
Just a thought.
Cheers.

You can paint particleboard, but it probably won't have a smooth finish like regular sanded wood.
In this case, I would paint it a flat black, so that it doesn't draw attention to the back of the desk.

YES In painting particleboard DON'T use water based paint as a first coat, as it will lift the fibers. Use an old fashioned oil-bound paint first. When dry use any paint you like.

I would either paint it flat black or go to a home improvement store and get some self-adhesive laminate to stick on the particle board. Kitchen refacers use it all the time. Real wood laminate with a adhesive back.

You would have to use a skim coat of drywall mud and then sand if you want it to looks as smooth as drywall. In either case, prime it first. Adding 10 coats of paint won't smooth it out if it's rough to begin with.

The kilz or Bullseye or any other pigmented shellac is the correct answer. Latex primers will cause the partical board surface to swell. Although MDF is a better product, it is also more expensive. If PB is acceptable to you, then have at it.

yes, you can paint just about everything, as long as you use the right paint. the best place for someone to help you get the right paint. is a hardware place, or a store that sells paint. usually they are ready to help you, so they can make a sell. at lowes, or any store that sells items to help you fix your home.

Particle board or paneling, long as there isn't any invisible film on it.
