You buy a Vista upgrade software.
The question is WHY do this? Vista, although well tested, lacks hard use data and will likely have some bugs in it that need to be addressed. Service Pack 1 which is yet to be announced, will help you out to fix these but until then you are unsure.
Vista is not yet approved for many uses. This may be a problem.
Vista requires more RAM and processer capability. I suspect you will not like the slower speed you are likely to see.
Finally, converting an XP operating system pc to a Vista one is not the same as a new pc with Vista. The new unit has a more powerful processor and more RAM and therefore faster and better.
I would not waste my money doing the Vista upgrade. I would use what I have until it wears out and then get what is best in the future.

you need to run the vista upgrade adviser before you even attempt to install the upgrade. see www.microsoft.com for the vista upgrade adviser tool.
your computer may not be able to run the software at an acceptable pace.
all you would need then if your computer is vista capable, is choose your prefered version of vista, buy the upgrade version, and install it like you would anyother program, though you should make sure you have a back up copy of your entire hard drive especially all your personal irreplaceable data files such as music, video, pictures and general documents that you have created.
you could always buy the OEM version of the software, however this may be cheaper, but it is not an upgrade, it would cause you to lose all data on your hard drive, and if you did install the OEM microsoft would not provide you with technical support to the same extent you would get with the upgrade or full version. OEM is a full version but for system builders to bundle with completed systems. buying an OEM version and a new hard drive is cheaper than buying either an upgrade or full version if you go to an etailer (in the UK) such as www.dabs.com.

Personally I wouldn't. And I'm using Vista64<_<
Vista IS good. But unless you know what you're doing, it can be a bit of a nightmare.
It also requires some pretty powerful hardware, unless you use the home basic version, in which case it's not worth changing.
You really need a dual-core processor (or a 2800+ single core) with at least 2 GB RAM. Xp will fit on an 80 GB hard drive with lots of space left over. I've used nearly 50% of my 150GB system drive with Vista, 4 games and some graphics software. Ouch^^;
Unless you have a laptop with dual-core, 2 GB ram and over 200gb of hard drive space, don't even think about it.

XP Pro can only be upgraded to Vista Ultimate. If you want either of the Home versions of Vista you will have to do a clean install.
A clean install would probably be best anyway as it removes a lot of the software crud that accumulates in a PC over time.

Vista is best if installed from scratch. Not too sure of the Upgrade. You can try for the Fun of it if you are a Tech person. For me Vista is better than XP.

I'm using Vista Home Premium - dual booting it on a separate partition on a laptop with Xp Pro - I used a Vista Home Premium upgrade disc, installed it on the new partition then upgraded that installation - basically, this work around tricks Vista into upgrading itself.

I'd say don't do it. There's nothing you can do in Vista that you can't do in XP. Vista is a resource hog that will slow down your computing experience big-time, not to mention all the crap they put into Vista for Digital Rights Management (DRM). See the link in the Source(s) below for an expose' on Vista.

If you have a good enough laptop you can just go and buy the Vista CD from any good PC shop. When you get home, you just READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, put in the CD and pray. It might also be a good idea to back up all your important files.

buy vista and install it, but i would save all your important files to a thumbdrive or a cd first!
and make sure your laptop is vista compatable!
and i do not agree that vista is slow or has bugs... i love it and it is better than XP, just takes getting use to...
