To be honest you can take your laptop drive and stick it in a PC in most cases - thing is - if you aren't sure this isn't easy.
It may be easier to take the HDD drive out - go to a local PC store and ask them to transfer it to a bunch of DVD's for you

The double ended USB cable is a good idea but will only work if you can power both units which is obviously not the case here. If your hard drive is not damaged (it probably isn't - sounds like the primary power source components are burnt out which means board damage rather than peripheral damage) then remove the drive and purchase a mounting unit for a hard drive (Maplin, PC World, etc) ensuring that it is compatible with the type of drive found in a laptop. Mount the drive in this and then use it as an external hard drive to your new laptop (usually via USB2.0 connection). You can then use Windows Explorer to locate and copy the files you want to keep.
I do believe that if you don't wish to go to the trouble of mounting your old drive externally some of the PC outlets will provide this service for you but I am not sure at what price.

It sounds like you are a victim of a bad battery and charger.
It is very likely that the hard drive was not damaged. You can purchase a hard drive enclosure from many computer stores. Be sure to get one that works with your notebook drive. Remove the drive from the notebook to make sure you have the proper style enclosure.
The enclosure enables you to connect the hard drive as a secondary drive and copy from it. These usually work better with a desktop but you may be successful with a notebook - check carefully before you buy.
You would transfer using Windows explorer.

GTB has got it spot on, but just and addition. Sony and others have done a recall on a lot of laptop batteries which were faulty and could set on fire. I would e-mail the manufacturer of your laptop and tell them what happened. You may get a replacement, it's got to be worth a try. Good luck.
